Heat is a form of energy. It results from the vibration of the atom and molecules of material.
Temperature differences cause the transfer of heat from high-temperature environment to
low-temperature environment. Therefore, the places we want to maintain the comfort conditions lose
or gain heat. The temperature which is the indicator of comfort in residences is 22°C. If the
inner surface temperature (wall surface) is 5-6°C different than the ambient temperature,
thermal bridge is created on the surface.
Columns, beams, concrete shear and flooring which form thermal bridge in buildings cause 20-50%
heat loss on the exterior surface of the building. The reason of such high percentage is that the heat
conductivity of the reinforced concrete has a high value of 2.1W/mK. Exterior walls cause 20-25% heat
loss of the exterior surface. The heat conductivity of the brick, gas concrete, pumice block, anchorage
prefabricated units used as exterior wall varies between 0.45-0.25 W/mK, and the heat transmission
coefficient (U) we require is provided. Windows and doors cause 10-25% heat loss.
Windows and doors which are specified in TS 825 Standard to have conductivity value of 2.8W/
mK should have multilayered glass and comply with TS 2164 standard. Another problem of thermal
bridges is condensation. If the condensation is on the inner and exterior surface of the wall, it causes
stripping of paint and plaster, suberication and molding. It needs painting and repairing every year. The
reason of condensation is that partial pressure due to temperature causes vapour transition because
of the difference between the inner and external environment. Condensation occurs due to mismatch
between the heat conductivity and vapour diffusion resistance values of the materials forming the wall.
For example; let’s assume that the inner environment is +22°C and external environment is -10°C. In this
case, saturation water vapour pressure is 2645 Pa, partial vapour pressure is 1587 Pa (60% humidity) in
the inner environment, and saturation water vapour pressure is 260 Pa, partial vapour pressure is 156 Pa
(60% humidity) in the external environment (TS 825).
Condensation causes corrosion on reinforcement in the carrier system. H2O mixes with CO2 which
penetrates the section from outside, and forms H2CO2 acid and reduces the reinforcement section.
Especially; Fe2O3 (ferrous oxide) formation is accelerated due to energy accumulated on the material in
hook, bent bar and mitre areas of the reinforcement. And as a result of this, it bears undesired results in
case of disasters such as earthquake.

In Energy Performance Certificate; building’s energy consumption and greenhouse gas emission are
classified between A and G. The classification is made considering the minimum requirements defined in
the regulations in force at the time of constructing the building. Energy class of a building is determined
by proportioning the consumption values calculated for the existing building to the consumption values
obtained in case of constructing the same building at the same place within the limits of the laws. Energy
consumption and greenhouse gas emission is very high in class G buildings which represents the lowest
performance for the buildings. Class G buildings consume energy at least 75% more than the minimum
requirements stipulated by laws. Class D buildings consume energy at the minimum requirements
stipulated by laws or 19% more than such requirements. The buildings assigned as Class C in Energy
Performance Certificate consume 1% to 20% less, and Class B buildings consume 21% to 60% less energy
than minimum requirements stipulated by laws. Class A buildings in which the energy performance at
maximum level consume energy up to 40% of the minimum requirements stipulated by laws.
How can Energy Performance Certificate be Received?
Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) for the existing buildings is issued by the energy efficiency consulting
firms authorized by Ministry of Public Works and Settlement, employing Energy Performance Certificate
experts. Energy Efficiency Consulting firms analyze your building; and collect the general information such
as construction year, direction, location etc, the basic information such as the construction material of your
building, insulation, roof, facade, flooring and window areas etc., technical information such as efficiency
of heating and/or cooling systems, hot water system, and the information such as the type, number of the
lighting elements used etc. In the light of this information, EPC expert makes the necessary calculations
about the energy performance of your building and produces Energy Performance Certificate and submits
to the approval of the relevant administration.
Energy Performance Certificate is required to be prepared for the whole building. Optionally, it can be
issued separately for each independent section having condominium or for different usage areas. One
copy of Energy Performance Certificate is kept by the owner, director, board of the directors and/or energy
director of the building, and one copy is posted at the building entrance where it can be easily seen.
Energy Performance Certificate is valid for 10 years from the date of issuance. In case any alteration is
made in the building which causes change in the energy need, Energy Performance Certificate should be
renewed within one year according to the regulations. The issuance of Energy Performance Certificate is
required for the procedures related to buying, selling and renting the building or independent sections.
The owner gives one copy of the Energy Performance Certificate to the buyer or tenant at the stage of
selling or renting the building or independent section.
Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) is a thermoplastic, closed-pore, typically white thermal insulation material
in the form of foam obtained from petroleum. It is obtained by inflating the polystyrene raw material
with pentane gas.
Small pores are created with pentane and the gas in these pores is replaced with air in a short
time following the production. Thus, the air entrapped in millions of small, closed pores performs
the thermal insulation feature. 98% of the material is inert and dry air. EPS can be produced at
different densities, technical features can be changed between the desired ranges, it offers the heat
performance same as the other materials in the most economic way, its features do not deteriorate in
time, it is a consumer and environment-friendly thermal insulation material.
